Threats to the effectiveness of insecticide-treated bednets for malaria control: thinking beyond insecticide resistance

چکیده
From 2004 to 2019, insecticide-treated bednets (ITNs) have been the most effective tool for reducing malaria morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Recently, however, decline cases deaths has stalled. Some suggest that this inertia is due increasing resistance vectors pyrethroid insecticides used treating ITNs. However, there presently little evidence reach conclusion we therefore recommend a broader perspective evaluate ITN effectiveness terms of access nets, use bioefficacy, durability should be taken. We argue single focus on insecticide misses bigger picture. To improve effects ITNs, net coverage increase by funding programmes, adopting improved strategies uptake, enhancing longevity active ingredients physical integrity while simultaneously accelerating development evaluation novel vector control tools. major campaign based (ITNs), indoor residual spraying (IRS), prompt treatment with antimalarials, prevented an estimated 1·2 billion 7·1 million Africa.1WHOWorld Malaria Report 2020. Insecticide-treated bednets and curtains for preventing malaria.
BACKGROUND Malaria is an important cause of illness and death in many parts of the world, especially in Africa. There has been a renewed emphasis on preventive measures, both at community and at individual level. Insecticide treated bednets and curtains are a promising preventive measure. OBJECTIVES The objective of this review was to assess the effects of insecticide-treated bednets or curta...
متن کاملFrom efficacy to effectiveness: insecticide-treated bednets in Africa.
Insecticide-treated bednets and curtains (ITBC) have proven in recent large-scale trials to have a high efficacy in reducing morbidity and mortality from malaria in African children. However, it is unlikely that the efficacy measured in trials can be entirely sustained under programme conditions. This has important implications for the cost-effectiveness of the intervention. Furthermore, there ...
متن کاملCombining Fungal Biopesticides and Insecticide-Treated Bednets to Enhance Malaria Control
In developing strategies to control malaria vectors, there is increased interest in biological methods that do not cause instant vector mortality, but have sublethal and lethal effects at different ages and stages in the mosquito life cycle. These techniques, particularly if integrated with other vector control interventions, may produce substantial reductions in malaria transmission due to the...
متن کاملEffect of insecticide-treated bednets for malaria control in Southeast Anatolia-Turkey.
Deltamethrin is one of the most effective insecticides for vector control, already widely used for bednet impregnation to control malaria. To evaluate the efficacy of deltamethrin-impregnated bednets in malaria control and in reducing the biting nuisance caused by Anopheles sacharovi, field trials were carried out in an endemic area of malaria in the surrounding rural settlements of Sanliurfa C...
متن کاملIndoor residual spray and insecticide-treated bednets for malaria control: theoretical synergisms and antagonisms.
Indoor residual spray (IRS) of insecticides and insecticide-treated bednets (ITNs) are the two most important malaria vector control tools in the tropical world. Application of both tools in the same locations is being implemented for malaria control in endemic and epidemic Africa. The two tools are assumed to have synergistic benefits in reducing malaria transmission because they both act at m...
